Construction Site Soil Extraction

To determine if you have a trench in your worksite plans, note the size difference. An excavation with a deeper than wide opening is a trench.

According to OSHA, a trench cannot be wider than 15 feet. Trenches on the other hand are much deeper than they are wide. See the full quote from OSHA’s Trenching and Excavation Manual below.

“OSHA defines an excavation as any man-made cut, cavity, trench,
or depression in the Earth’s surface formed by earth removal.
A trench is defined as a narrow excavation (in relation to its length)
made below the surface of the ground. In general, the depth

(measured at the bottom) is not greater than 15 feet (4.6 m).”
